Martin BREUL
comics studies, refugee literature, Canadian literature, world literature, contemporary writing, online poetry and publishing, Cold War literary history, trauma theory
Martin Breul鈥檚 FRQSC-funded project investigates the life of Canadian writing in socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the exchange between Canadian authors and publishers with the GDR鈥檚 literary sphere, specifically its censorial, government-run publishing industry. Martin also pursues the study of refugee comics, on which he completed his M.A. research at McGill. His work in this field examines the interactions between the versatile literary form of the graphic novel and the pressing issues of increasing global displacement and a reactionary shift towards the right in response to this population movement. He is a member of the McGill Refugees Research Group and a tutor at the McGill Writing Centre.
Besides his academic research, Martin writes and publishes poetry, reviews, and flash fiction in print and online. His first chapbook of collected poetry, love poems suck, appeared in 2023 with Montr茅al-based micropress Cactus Press. He has appeared at readings across Scotland, Canada, and Germany, and is the operations manager of the Montreal International Poetry Prize, housed by the Department of English at McGill.
