EMHI ROUNDS – November 9, 2023

Hi all, Join us for a talk on core topic, a journal club and a case study in Health Informatics

9am: Core Topic - Evaluation of Biomedical and Health Information Resources, chapter No. 13, By: Bassam Alomar, Pediatric-EMHI fellow

From the book:

Learning objectives: t are clinical data?

  1. What challenges make studies in informatics difficult to carry out?
  2. How are these challenges addressed in practice?
  3. What are the key factors to consider as part of a process of deciding what are the most important questions to use to frame a study?

Question: What features do all evaluations have in common?

10am:  Journal Club -review by Dr. Saleh Alsaeed , Pediatric-EMHI fellow,

Learning Objectives:

  1. Does the use of interactive digital therapeutics significantly reduce agitation levels in delirious hospitalized patients compared to standard care practices?
  2. What impact does the digital calming intervention have on the usage of unscheduled medications typically administered for agitation in delirious patients?
  3. Does engaging with a screen-based digital intervention lead to a measurable shift in the clinical signs of delirium, beyond the temporary management of agitation symptoms?

Question: How effective is the use of interactive digital therapeutics in managing agitation in delirium hospitalized patients, and what implications does its use have on medication reliance, patient care, and healthcare resource utilization?

11am: Case Study - GOFlow: Smartwatch app to deliver laboratory results in emergency departments – A feasibility study, By: Dr. Saleh Alsaeed

Learning Objectives:

  1. How does the introduction of smartwatch technology impact the efficiency of emergency physicians at the point-of-care in terms of accessing laboratory results?
  2. What are the perceived usability and satisfaction levels of emergency physicians using a smartwatch application designed for immediate notification of laboratory results?
  3. How does the use of a smartwatch application affect the time taken by emergency physicians to visit a patient after receiving notification of laboratory results?

Question: How does the utilization of wearable technology applications enhance the efficiency of clinical workflows and patient care in emergency medicine settings?
