Principles of Laboratory Radiation Safety - Macdonald campus

Target Audience: All staff and students required to handle and/or store radioactive materials must follow this course.

Non-Mcgill student registrants please complete and submit the Paying Participant Training Form

Content: Basic radiation physics; Biological effects of ionizing radiation; Sources of exposure; Dose limits; Radiation protection principles; Environmental surveillance and dosimetry; Radiation safety management; Safe laboratory work practices; Emergency procedures; Useful radiation safety formulae and how to receive and transport radioisotope packages.

Certification: A course certificate is presented to participants who successfully complete a written examination. If you misplace your McGill Radiation Safety Certificate, there is a $10.00 charge for replacement.

Duration: 9h00 to 17h30 (9h00-16h00 for the course and 16h00-17h30 for the Exam)

Cost (McGill): Free for McGill Community (students, staff and faculty). When registering using the on-line registration system you will be prompted to enter a FOAPAL - no FOAPAL is required therefore leave the field blank.

Cost (Non-McGill): $50 (if paid by PI); $200.00 per person plus applicable taxes for other payment methods.

Examination information: The exam is compulsory for all staff and students under McGill's permit. Course notes, English-French or English-another language dictionary and a scientific calculator are allowed during the exam. The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and lasts for 90 minutes.
