KPE's Shannon Herrick named as finalist for 2018 SSHRC Storytellers contest
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) has announced that Shannon Herrick, master's student with the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, has been named as a finalist for the 2018 SSHRC Storytellers contest.
The annual Storytellers contest challenges post-secondary students from across Canada to demonstrate—in three minutes or 300 words—how social sciences and humanities research is affecting our lives, our world and our future for the better.Earlier this week the council named25 finalists. Eachfinalist receives a cash prize of $3,000 and the opportunity to compete in the Storytellers Showcase. This year’s Showcase will be held at the2018Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, taking place May26 to June1 at the University of Regina.
ԲԴDz’s The story is titled "LGBTQ+ and Physical Activity" and it deals with issues surrounding LGBTQ+ adults who engage in athletics and physical activity, including transphobia, homophobia, gender identity, and exclusion.

In doing so, they have effectively demonstrated the value of social sciences and humanities research, offering critical insights into modern social, cultural, economic and wellness issues that Canadians value,” saidSSHRCPresident Ted Hewitt. “Congratulations toSSHRC’s 25 Finalists!”

Shannon Herrick is a second-year MA student in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, and will be starting her PhD with KPE in September, 2018. Shannon's thesis explores the experience of LGBTQ+ adults in physical activity. Shannon's supervisor is Professor Lindsay Duncan.
