What motivated you to start Vope Medical?

Vope Medical started as a project in the surgical innovation program at McGill. After interviewing 30 surgeons, we found that visibility during surgeries and lens cleaning was problematic with no software solutions on the market. Augmented images were proposed to surgeons who seemed open at the time. Since then, we’ve only been growing.

How did the Dobson Centre play a role in Vope Medical as we know it today?

Beyond the great people and hospitality, the Dobson provides great support at every stage and is tailored to each industry. We won 2nd place in the Dobson Cup, and the funding at an early-stage made a difference for Vope. Returning to the Dobson at the fundraising stage has been instrumental in connecting us with key partners and investors.

What are the unique challenges that you face as a medtech start-up?

Medical devices cannot generate revenue until the FDA and HC process. However, to get to these stages and apply for regulatory approval, you need funding. Being a start-up in medtech has more risk and investment but ultimately, as founders we learn how to surround ourselves with the right partners and mentors that will help us get there. In Quebec, we are lucky to also have a lot of support when it comes to mitigating the risks of the regulatory process.
