From 1998 to 2001, I spent the best time of my life partying with amazing mates, learning from the best teachers in the world, and engaging with McGill’s crew as I worked for the information office of my Faculty. Twenty years later, I’m still so proud to share my experience as a BCom alumna.

Caroline Widmer
BCom Class of 2001
Thu, 18 Jun 2020 21:14:55 +0000 University Advancement Team 76100 at /desautels A transformational experience /desautels/article/bcom100-stories/transformational-experience
There aren’t enough words to describe my time at McGill, but if I had to pick one word, it would be enriching.

On the academic front, McGill facilitated a significant amount of learning; it gave me a foundational base of knowledge that I can build upon as I enter the workforce and, frankly, the real world. By giving me opportunities to develop my critical thinking skills, it helped shape my way of addressing problems and seeing the world. I learned to develop a healthy dose of skepticism; to always ask questions and never take anything at face value.
Thu, 18 Jun 2020 21:12:06 +0000 University Advancement Team 76099 at /desautels Take time to appreciate the richness of the education /desautels/article/bcom100-stories/take-time-appreciate-richness-education
Looking back at my time in both undergrad and graduate school at Desautels, I now realize how big of a part it played in my life.

I know that, professionally, I wouldn't be in the job I love now if it weren't for the McGill professors, alumni network and fellow classmates of mine.

Thu, 18 Jun 2020 20:56:35 +0000 University Advancement Team 76098 at /desautels Made by resilience, Made by McGill /desautels/article/bcom100-stories/made-resilience-made-mcgill
I had to fight my way into McGill by dealing with a tough, reality-oriented father. He came from a family of nine that valued work over education. When I was 16, he offered me a large sum of money to drop out of high school and start working with him. He asked me not to mention anything to my mother. However, when I got home, I told her, “I just made $50,000!” She told my father that, unlike him, I was going to finish high school and that I’d be getting a university education, too.
Thu, 18 Jun 2020 20:54:09 +0000 University Advancement Team 76097 at /desautels Proud to have founded the Management Cancer Auction /desautels/article/bcom100-stories/proud-have-been-involved-management-cancer-auctions-founding
My thoughts go back to 1976 when, as a junior in the Faculty of Management at McGill, I helped launch the very first Management Cancer Auction. I had the pleasure and thrill of being the auctioneer at the event, which was held as part of the McGill Carnival Week. What fun watching excited students bid against each other and sometimes, themselves!

In 1977, I was elected president of the Management Undergraduate Society where I helped plan the second annual auction.

Thu, 18 Jun 2020 20:52:17 +0000 University Advancement Team 76096 at /desautels Introduced to a world full of opportunity /desautels/article/bcom100-stories/i-was-introduced-world-full-opportunity
I was first in my family to go to college, so we deemed many moments special and worthy of celebration during my four-year undergraduate journey. Walking across the stage at graduation felt like a group victory because I could not have gotten there alone; it was thanks to many years of sacrifice by my immigrant parents, and the lessons they've taught me about dedication and hard work. They have been, and continue to be, my greatest supporters.
Mon, 15 Jun 2020 15:34:48 +0000 University Advancement Team 76075 at /desautels A newfound appreciation for what it takes to be a leader /desautels/article/bcom100-stories/newfound-appreciation-what-it-takes-be-leader
The current time of uncertainty has drastically altered the future for the Class of 2020 across the world. Despite the challenges that we now face together, being part of the 100th graduating class of 㽶Ƶ’s Bachelor of Commerce program is an exciting achievement.
Tue, 09 Jun 2020 16:08:16 +0000 University Advancement Team 76055 at /desautels I wouldn’t want it any other way /desautels/article/bcom100-stories/i-wouldnt-want-it-any-other-way
Looking back at my experience in McGill’s BCom program, I can confidently say that I wouldn’t want it any other way. Not only did I learn from exceptional practitioners in academia, but the experience also helped me develop various soft skills. In my story, I would like to emphasize how the program taught me to manage relationships.
Tue, 09 Jun 2020 16:02:50 +0000 University Advancement Team 76054 at /desautels Involvement can shape your McGill experience /desautels/article/bcom100/involvement-can-shape-your-mcgill-experience
One of my favourite memories in the BCom program is from my second year in Don Melville's Not-for-Profit-Consulting program.

My group spent almost the whole year developing a solution for a Montreal NGO with our mentor from McKinsey & Co. I eventually found my passion for data science and dedicated a lot of my time to learning about this dynamic field.
Mon, 25 May 2020 14:46:28 +0000 University Advancement Team 75965 at /desautels Take time to appreciate what really matters /desautels/article/bcom100/take-time-appreciate-what-really-matters
Between my four jobs, team projects, exams, events, and classes, my McGill journey was a busy one! I was known for always running around campus with a crazy agenda.

What helped me get through it all was having the support of my family, the amazing women featured in my pictures, and every other person who helped me throughout this journey! McGill tested my limits, helped me discover my passion for organizational behaviour, taught me many things, and introduced me to so many amazing people.
Mon, 25 May 2020 14:26:41 +0000 University Advancement Team 75960 at /desautels
