Remembering the Victims of the École Polytechnique Massacre

Published: 6 December 2020

On DecemberÌý6th, 1989, 14 women were murdered at École Polytechnique de Montréal in what remains one of the deadliest mass shooting in the country’s history. This solemn anniversary has become annually marked with a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women - inviting us to commemorate the tragic event by reflecting on lessons that rang out then and continue to echo 31 years later. Today’s date holds as a reminder that we should, and will, do better as we continue to work for behaviours and policies that support equality, inclusiveness, and an end to structural and individual violence against women and girls. This engagement is what we can do to honour the lives lost, and to fight against the continued suffering of those living within abusive and/or toxic environments.
