Op-Ed: COVID-19 Doesn’t Discriminate, But People Do
Published: 23 May 2020
Research assistant and PhD student Rebecca Katz has written an op-ed piece about discrimination in the time of COVID-19. She explains:Ěý
It’s clichĂ© to say that Covid-19 doesn’t discriminate. Viruses –Ěýwhich occupy a grey area between nonliving and living organismsĚý– can’t perceive race, class, religion, or other personal characteristics. However, humans and our social structures do, with tragic results, including physical attacks,Ěýproliferating online hatred, andĚýdisproportionate Covid-19 death rates in racialized communitiesĚýthat represent large percentages of front-line health care and service workers.
Rebecca talks about how marginalizedĚýcommunities have been 'other-ed' and scapegoated during this pandemic.
