Facebook Canada Hard Questions Roundtable on Women's Safety Online

IMPACTS Project Director Dr. Shaheen Shariff, along with research assistant and PhD student Christopher Dietzel, will join and co-host in Ottawa on April 23rd for the first global ±á²¹°ù»åÌý²Ï³Ü±ð²õ³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²õ Roundtable on the topic of Women's Safety Online and the launch of the .Ìý

As more and more of our lives extend online, and digital technologies transform how we live, we all face challenging new questions — everything from how best to safeguard personal privacy online to the meaning of free expression to the future of journalism worldwide. Facebook debates these questions fiercely and freely inside the company every day, and with experts from around the world whom they consult for guidance.Ìý is an effort by Facebook to open dialogue on these difficult questions. The Facebook Canada ±á²¹°ù»åÌý²Ï³Ü±ð²õ³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²õ Roundtable Series takes these difficult conversations offline to consult with Canadian experts and stakeholders who face these issues on the ground.Ìý

The ±á²¹°ù»åÌý²Ï³Ü±ð²õ³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²õ Roundtable on Women's Safety Online will be a two-part event: 

1. CO-HOST FIRESIDE CHAT 
The event will kick off with a fireside chat broadcast on Facebook Live. will introduce the issues and Canadian landscape with regards to Women's Safety Online. Antigone Davis, Head of will discuss new tools on the platform intended to make the online platform a safer space for women. The fireside chat will be a public event, broadcast on .Ìý

2. ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION 
The roundtable will be a moderated discussion, closed to the participants invited to participate. We are keen to learn about the most pressing issues being faced by advocates and experts on cyber-violence and women's safety online in Canada. We will also seek feedback on new tools that Facebook has recently launched and/or that are in development. The roundtable discussion will be a private event, held under Chatham House Rules.
