Citizenship and Popular Participation: Views from the Fringes
One Day @ McGill presents seminars that allow you first-hand access to a McGill experience. Held on the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ campus, these affordable small-group sessions are unique educational opportunities in which you are able to access in-depth knowledge produced by our academic community.
Description: This seminar explores a key theme in politics and society that traverses the classical, modern and contemporary imaginations: participation. Starting from the premise that participation is a property of citizenship and employing diverse approaches from several disciplines in McGill's Faculty of Arts, the seminar offers a critical analysis of the assumptions and challenges of political participation in democratic societies. What does participation mean when viewed from the contrasting perspectives of the mainstream and margins of society? What counts as participation? What is participation for? These and other questions will be explored in contexts ranging from ancient Greek democracy to the fringes of cyberspace.
