We live in an age that valorizes virality, where high-growth enterprises seek to go global in scale. But what works for Silicon Valley doesn’t necessarily work everywhere. In an article published in the Academy of Management Journal, Associate Professor of Strategy & Organization Anna Kim questions the value of high-growth entrepreneurship for economically challenged locales. She found that ventures with deep local roots created jobs and addressed local problems and spillover effects that stayed local.

In 2024, McGill Desautels was well-represented among the winners. Associate Professor Anna Kim was honoured with the President’s Prize for Emerging Researchers for her commitment to disseminating research on entrepreneurship and sustainability through traditional and social media platforms.

The Prize was created to recognize outstanding achievement among those who share their knowledge on a vast range of subjects with the media and the public. This year, there were applicants from 11 of the 12 faculties, a sign that sharing knowledge and a love of learning continue to be embedded in McGill’s DNA.

Rapid scaling funded through venture capital is the holy grail of Silicon Valley startups—and has been hailed as a way to encourage economic growth in impoverished places. Yet, slower growth could yield greater benefits for local economies, according to Anna Kim, Associate Professor of Strategy and Organization at McGill Desautels.
Scaling intentionally, rather than rapidly, could yield social, economic, and environmental benefits
The most successful technology companies have scaled quickly from startups to become the world’s largest companies. “The Silicon Valley formula can be great for some enterprises,” says Associate Professor Anna Kim in a piece by The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine, “but it doesn’t always have the best social, economic, and environmental impacts.” Instead, companies can choose to scale deeply and intentionally.
