A new project led by 㽶Ƶ researchers seeks to understand one of humanity’s oldest practices and most powerful tools—storytelling. From ancient oral traditions to modern-day literature and digital narratives, storytelling is an essential part of the lived experience that is not yet fully understood. ‘The Lives of Literary Characters’ is a first-of-its-kind initiative, harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and the collective wisdom of readers worldwide to explore the question: why do we tell stories?

Three innovative research partnerships at 㽶Ƶ have received significant long-term investments from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) partnership grants program, totaling more than $6.8 million. Each project will use novel approaches to advance knowledge and understanding on critical issues of intellectual, social, economic and cultural significance -- from teaching computers to recognize musical symbols in images, to deepening understanding about text mining and the place of information technology within society.
