We are pleased to announce that the AMURE union representing Post-Doctoral Fellows held a General Assembly and voted in favor of the proposed new collective agreement.

The parties are working on finalising the documents in preparation for the signature of the new collective agreement. Information sessions will soon be organised to share the details of this new agreement with the community. The new agreement will come in effect on the date of signature by the parties and will expire on May 31, 2026.

We are pleased to announce that the parties reached a tentative agreement on March 28 and that the Union will soon invite its membership to a General Assembly to vote on the proposed new collective agreement. The parties have agreed not to communicate the contents of the agreement until the vote has taken place.

Negotiations for the renewal of the collective agreement for Research Assistants and Associates between AMURE and McGill began in the Fall of 2022. The parties have been meeting on a regular basis and have been able to discuss and come to agreement on a number of non-monetary elements.

On April 26, an agreement in principle was reached between the parties regarding the terms of their collective agreement. Previously, research associates and research assistants were part of separate bargaining units, whose collective agreements expired in April 2016. They have since merged into a single bargaining unit.

The parties met on March 21 in the presence of a Conciliator appointed by the Ministry of Labour. They presented their monetary proposals and addressed each other’s questions. The employer committed to assessing the financial implications of the Union’s proposal and will share this assessment at their next meeting, scheduled for April 26. Two additional meetings are scheduled for May.

On February 17, the parties met in the presence of a conciliator appointed by the Ministry of Labour – their second such meeting. McGill presented the Union with a French translation of eight articles agreed upon by both parties in previous meetings, and the Union will review these texts in the coming days. The parties will work together with the aim of finalizing them at the next meeting.

On February 7, Quebec’s Ministère du Travail, de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale accepted AMURE’s request that an arbitrator be appointed to oversee negotiations. If AMURE and McGill cannot agree upon a choice of arbitrator by February 17, the Ministry will appoint one. An arbitrator is a neutral participant with a mandate to help both parties reach common ground. If an arbitrator determines that common ground cannot be achieved, she/he is also empowered to impose legally binding decisions on any outstanding points of contention.

The Union and University representatives met on December 19, 2016.

As a follow-up to previous meetings, the University made several written proposals relative to: Harassment, Sexual Harassment and Discrimination; Health and Safety; Work Accidents; Postings, Appointments and Reappointments; and Probationary Periods.

The parties reached an agreement and ratified the texts of the articles relative to Work Accidents and Harassment, Sexual Harassment and Discrimination.

The parties met on November 4 and 11. They shared their objectives and constraints related to the posting mechanisms for positions of research associates, research assistants and casual research assistants.

They discussed topics such as centralized posting tools, priority for McGill employees, employee selection criteria, duration of contracts, advice for employees who are relocating/have relocated from other countries, availability list and several other topics related to staffing activities.

The Association of Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Research Employees (AMURE) unit representing postdoctoral researchers and Ï㽶ÊÓƵ have agreed on all aspects of a first collective agreement. The final elements were agreed on at a meeting the two parties held on NovemberÌý25.

The University will soon submit the tentative agreement for approval to McGill’s senior leadership. The union and the University will then finalize the text of the agreement and the union will submit it to the vote of its membership at a date to be communicated later.

The parties met on November 7 and ratified the articles that had been agreed on at the previous meeting. These account for a significant portion of the agreement under negotiation. Three more articles – pertaining to grievances, disciplinary measures and termination notices – were discussed, agreed to and ratified. A few remaining articles still need to be discussed.

The next meeting is set for November 21.

This update is meant to inform the community about ongoing negotiations and has been validated by the union.

The parties met on October 20 and 21. They discussed and agreed on the content of the articles pertaining to leaves without pay, to union activities (non-monetary aspects), to the reimbursement of expenses and to temporary alternate work arrangement.

The parties also agreed on the content of two agreement letters related to Human Resources information systems, as well as McGill ID cards and library access.

The parties also addressed the health and safety clause, a discussion which will be resumed at the next meeting, set for November 4.

The parties met on October 17. The union presented a global counter-offer that, for the most part, aligns with the employer's offer.ÌýSome articlesÌýstill need to be discussed. The parties met on September 30 and on October 4 and discussed several topics. They reached agreements on the clauses pertaining to arbitration and disciplinary measures. The parties also discussed the question of employee privacy and agreed to add some language to that effect in the collective agreement. They initiated discussions on the topic of employee probation and decided to resume this discussion when the article related to posting, appointments and reappointments is addressed.

The parties met on September 22 and 23 and made progress on several non-monetary clauses. They reached agreements on the articles pertaining to relations between the parties, intellectual property and conduct of research, copies of the collective agreement, the labour relations committee and the grievance procedure. Following a discussion, the parties agreed that it was not necessary to include additional language related to workers solidarity, academic freedom and McGill governance.

The parties were scheduled to meet again on September 30.
