The Institute for the Study of International Development (ISID) at 香蕉视频 will host the conference听鈥�The Challenge of Developing Countries from the Bottom-up鈥澨�to examine the needs of international development in today鈥檚 increasingly complex world.听The event will bring together more than a dozen of the world鈥檚 top figures in international development. Speakers will discuss methods of generating national development in sustainable ways through the participation of experts from the non-profit, private and public sectors, local and transnational civil society actors, and the international development community. Observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) show that the most vigorous bursts of star birth in the cosmos took place much earlier than previously thought. The results are published in a set of papers to appear in the journal听Nature听and in the听Astrophysical Journal. The research is the most recent example of the discoveries coming from the new international ALMA observatory, which celebrates its inauguration today.

Syphilis is on the rise worldwide and there is an urgent need for reliable and rapid screening, particularly for people who live in areas where access to health care is limited. An international research team, led by scientists at the Research Institute of the 香蕉视频 Health Centre (RI-MUHC) in Montreal, has demonstrated that rapid and point-of-care tests (POC) for syphilis are as accurate as conventional laboratory tests. The findings, which were published in PLoS ONE, call for a major change in approach to syphilis testing and recommend replacing first-line laboratory tests with POC tests globally, especially in resource-limited settings.

Prof. Derek Gray, of the Department of Chemistry, and Prof. In-Ho Jung, of the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering, will each receive a Synergy Award for Innovation. These awards were launched by NSERC in 1995 to recognize partnerships between universities and industry in natural sciences and engineering research and development. Since their inception, the awards have honoured the most outstanding achievements of university-industry collaboration in the natural sciences and engineering. Each winner receives a $200,000 research grant.
