The Department of Pediatrics is happy to announce Drs. Larry Lands and Bruce Mazer have been awarded the Sessenwein Award for a term of five years starting April 1, 2018.

Dr. Lands is presently Director of the Division of Respiratory Medicine and has an extensive track record as an independent investigator focusing on the immune challenges underlying cystic fibrosis and asthma.

The Department of Pediatrics is happy to announce the 2018-2019 recipients for Innovation Fund Awards.This annual $100,000 opportunity is meant to provide support for five projects formulated by membership targeting efforts in clinical innovation.

This year, due to quality and budgeting, the number of projects that will be funded has expanded to 6 in total. The projects that were selected are as follows:

Dr. Kent Syalor has beenappointedas the Faculty of Medicine's Director of Indigenous Health Professions Education.

This appointment is a natural recognition of Dr. Saylor's long involvement in promoting both First Nations' participation and subject content in the formation of future health professionals. No doubt this will make a long term impact not only on the participants in his innovative efforts, but on the health of our First Nations population.

It is to the entire Department's credit when our expertise is recognized outside the 'walls' of the Department.

Dr. Larry Lands has been re-appointed as the Division Director of Respirology, in the Department of Pediatrics.

A distinguished clinician-investigator with a long track record of operational granting and publication success with international 'rayonnement', Dr. Landshas ably led his group for a number of years. Particularly impressive has been his solid mentoring of junior staff and his imaginative responses to clinical challenges. The support of his Division throughout the renewal process was palpable and would be the envy of any leader.

Dr. Thérèse Perreault has been re-appointed as the Division Director of Neonatology. Dr. Perreaultis the inaugural Director of this Division that was formed through the amalgamation of the Montreal Children's Hospital and Royal Victoria Hospitallegacy NICUs in advance of the move of both hospitals to our present Glen site.

Dr. Julia von Oettingen of Endocrinology, Assistant Professor in the Department of pediatrics,has been selected as one of this year’s recipients of the 2017-2018Dr. Donald A. Henderson Prize for Outstanding Global Health Research from the McGill Global Health Programsfor her publication titled “Population Survey of Iodine Deficiency and Environmental Disruptors of Thyroid Function in Young Children in Haiti”.

The Department of Pediatrics is pleased to announce that Dr. Patricia Fontela was appointed theDepartment's Associate Chair for Research effective September 1, 2017.

Dr. Fontela is an attending in our Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and runs an innovative research program focusing on nosocomial infections. She has been most successful at securing external salary and operational support funding.

"The calendar year 2016 represented our first full year on the new Glen site. Not only did we experience a cycle of seasons, we also experienced the entire academic cycle. It was thus a year of numerous ‘firsts’ however defined and relentless novelty. It was also a year of adaptations and adjustments to a new geography.

To date, there are disproportionately fewer women than men in leadership positions in the McGill Department of Pediatrics especially in the roles of Division Directors, Associate Chairs, Vice-Chair, Department Chair, Head of the Montreal Children's Hospital Child Health Research and designation of "professor". Therefore, the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics has mandated a Task Force to develop realistic action plans that can be implemented to engage more of the Department of Pediatrics female faculty to take on leadership roles.

The Department of Pediatrics ispleased to inform our community that starting June 1, 2017 Dr. Robert Sternszus, Assistant Professor, will assume leadership of the Pediatric Residency Training Programas its Program Director. Though but a few years on staff, Dr. Sternszus has established himself as one of the Department's many rising and established stars in medical education. A McGill graduate and a product of the training program he now leads, Dr. Sternszus has an M.A. in Educational Psychology.
