The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is now inviting applications to Grand Challenges Explorations, which has awarded over 1070 grants in over 58 countries to date. Grand Challenges ExplorationsÌýseeks innovative global health and development solutions. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any organization, includingÌýuniversities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations as well as for-profit companies.

The annual Canada Gairdner Global Health Symposium is upcoming on Wednesday October 29, 2014 at the MaRS Auditorium. The symposium will be celebrating the work of Dr. Satoshi Omura, who discovered the microorganism that would lead to the development of ivermectin, by focusing on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). The event will be webcasted for those who cannot attend in person, and will be posting that information in the coming weeks.

The 2014 Canadian National Disaster and Humanitarian Response Program is

Canada's first comprehensive and collaborative professional humanitarian training

program involving humanitarian NGO, UN, government and academic faculty and

partners across North America. The professional certificate course is run over two

consecutive weeks. It comprises 3 modules: a 5-day Introductory Course (May 5-9), a 3-

day Advanced Course (May 2-14) and a 4-day Simulation Exercise (SimEx) (May 15-18).

Dr. Dan Deckelbaum,ÌýGHP Director, participated at the annual meeting of the College of Surgeons of Central, Eastern and Southern Africa (COSECSA). Pictured are Dr. Lando Ruhungande, senior surgical resident at the National University of Rwanda, and Dr. Deckelbaum after Lando's presentation of a collaborative research project between the Centre for Global Surgery at the MUHC and the National University of Rwanda. The title of the presentation was: A descriptive analysis of surgical interventions performed in a tertiary care facility in Kigali, Rwanda.
