The 2024 prize for the Best Undergraduate Paper in International Development Studies is awarded to Tanguy Montandon. Tanguy graduated in 2024 with a First-Class Honours in International Development Studies, and minors in Economics and Management. At McGill, he was an Integrated Management Student Fellow and pursued research on the Economic and Environmental Impacts of BIXI under the supervision of Sanjith Gopalakrishnan. Outside of school, Tanguy is passionate about energy and food security.

Professor Jacob Blanc of the Institute for the Study of International Development and the Department of History has had a new book published with Duke University Press. In The Prestes Column, Jacob Blanc offers a new interpretation of the legendary rebellion, in which a band of rebel officers and soldiers marched fifteen thousand miles through the vast interior regions of Brazil between 1924 and 1927.
The Institute for the Study of International Development is pleased to welcome Professor Jacob Blanc as a new appointed Faculty member. Professor Blanc is jointly appointed with the Institute and the Department of History.
The Institute for the Study of International Development welcomes Rohinton P. Medhora as its most recent Professor of Practice. Rohinton Medhora is a distinguished fellow and former president of the Centre for International Governance Innovation (2012–2022). He also served on CIGI’s International Board of Governors from 2009 to 2014. Previously, he was vice president of programs at Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC). His fields of expertise are international economic relations, innovation policy, development economics and governance.

Climate change continues to cause damage in Africa. It triggers food insecurity, poverty and displacement. The impacts of climate change are being exacerbated by rapid urbanization, geopolitical tensions, headwinds caused by the invasion of Ukraine and its impacts on agricultural exports and fertilizers.

Eliane Ubalijoro (B.Sc.(Agr)’92, M.Sc.’95, Ph.D.’01) has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) and Director General of ICRAF -the world’s leading research and development centre on trees, forests and landscapes. Dr. Ubalijoro will be the first African woman Director General of a CGIAR Research Center and CEO of two Centers in CGIAR’s 52-year history.
