An unconventional library at McGill is allowing students and faculty to borrow seeds.
Reading books might help you grow ideas, but McGill’s [Macdonald] Library is giving out something that sprouts way more literally. The library is offering 130 varieties of seeds, free of charge, as part of a new program.
“We’re providing seeds that are more rare, more unusual, and ones that are adapted specifically for our climate,” said librarian Dana Ingalls.
Some unique buffalo calves were born at the Ontario Buffalo Company in Stirling, ON. Their genetic mothers were only 4 months of age at the time their oocytes were collected by laparoscopy, fertilized and cultured in vitro and implanted one week later in adult recipients that carried the pregnancies to term. All procedures except the transfer to the recipient cows were conducted at the Large Animal Research Unit (LARU) in Macdonald Campus, under supervision of Drs.
The BETTER study (BEhaviors, Therapies, TEchnologies and hypoglycemic Risk in Type 1 diabetes), co-led by Professor Anne-Sophie Brazeau, RD, PhD (㽶Ƶ School of Human Nutrition) and Dr Rémi Rabasa-Lhoret (Institut de Recherches Clinique de Montréal), is a 4-year project co-funded by CIHR, through the strategies for patient-oriented research (SPOR), and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (total funding $3,000,000).
