Warren and Laforest named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL - Hayley Warren of Orillia, Ont., and Francis Laforest of Laval, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 24, 2009.

Warren, a 5-foot-3 sprinter and hurdler on the women's track and field team, won gold and silver medals at the Laval Invitational meet in Quebec City, Saturday. The 19-year-old kinesiology freshman finished first in the 60-metre hurdles, clocking in at 8.98 seconds. She also placed third in the 60m sprint with a time of 8.14 seconds. Warren is a product of Patrick Fogerty Catholic Secondary school in Orillia.

Laforest, a 6-foot, 155-pound member of the men's badminton team, won four of his five matches to help McGill place third of six teams at a mixed competition in Sherbrooke on Saturday. The 22-year-old finance sophomore swept all three of his singles matches over UQAC (21-4, 21-5), Sherbrooke (21-8, 21-7) and UQAM (21-14, 21-7), then split his two doubles matches, winning 2-1 over Laval (19-21, 21-16, 21-18) and losing 2-0 vs Montreal (18-21, 19-21). Laforest previously graduated from College Montmorency prior to enrolling at McGill in 2008.
