Ward, Bettez bring home silverware from Germany
RAVENSBURG, GERMANY – McGill's Catherine Ward and Ann-Sophie
Bettez will bring home silver medals from the MLP Cup in Germany
after the Canadian national women’s under-22 team suffered a 2-1
loss to Sweden in the tourney finale, Tuesday.
Ward, a rearguard from Town of Mt. Royal, Que., and Bettez, a
forward from Sept-Iles, Que., each had a goal and two assists in
the four-game tourney.
Meghan Agosta of Ruthven, Ont., scored the lone marker for the
Canadians, who had tallied 17 over its first three games.
Agosta gave Canada a 1-0 lead at 2:13 of the second period, with
her tourney-leading fourth goal.
The Swedes evened the score at 13:56 when Erica Uden-Johansson beat
Wilfrid Laurier University netminder Liz Knox of Stouffville, Ont.,
for the first goal allowed by Canada in the tourney.
Sweden took the lead just 36 seconds into the final period when
Uden-Johansson set up Frida Svedin Thunström on a power play for
the game-winner.
The Canadians held a 35-24 advantage in shots on goal, including a
15-6 margin in the third, but were stoned time and time again
by Swedish goaltender Sara Grahn.
The loss also ended Canada’s 11-game win streak at the tournament –
thier first loss since falling 6-4 to Germany in the final game of
the 2006 event, a game that also took place at the Eissporthalle
Ravensburg.
