Volleyballer Thomson sparks rare win in Quebec City

QUEBEC CITY - Senior Jennifer Thomson of Rosemere, Que., had 13 kills, 17 digs, a 2.50 passing ratio and an ace as the visiting McGill women's volleyball squad rallied for a rare 3-1 victory over seventh-ranked Laval at the Centre PEPS on Friday.

It marked only the ninth regular-season victory ever against Laval for the 10th-ranked Martlets, who have three lifetime wins in the provincial capital.

Laval hung on to win the opening set 26-24 but the Martlets roared back to win in straight sets, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-19. The four-set match took two hours and 15 minutes to play.

Senior Kelsey Irwin, a 5-foot-11 middle blocker from Vancouver, B.C., contributed 11 kills, a pair of aces, eight digs and two stuff blocks to the victory. Second-year setter Marcela Mansure, a native of Brazil, registered 39 assists along with 16 digs and an ace.Ìý Freshman libero Daphnée-Maude André-Morin of Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac, Que., was credited with a team-high 20 digs and posted a 2.13 passing ratio.

The victory improved second-place McGill's record to 12-3 in the four-team Quebec conference, four points ahead of Laval, which dropped to 10-4. Montreal leads the conference with an unblemished 14-0 record.

McGill returns home to play cellar-dwelling Sherbrooke (7-6) at Love Competition Hall on Sunday at 1 p.m.
