Volleyball Martlets master Maritimes with 4-match sweep

MONTREAL - The McGill women's volleyball team had a perfect weekend, winning all four matches at the Quebec-Atlantic interlocking league tournament hosted by Université de Montreal.

In fact, all four teams from the QSSF conference had a stellar performance, winning a combined 15 of 16 matches against their AUS counterparts.

The Martlets, ranked No.10 in the nation, opened on Friday with a 3-1 decision over Acadia, winning by set scores of 25-16, 19-25, 25-21 and 25-17.

On Saturday, McGill swept a doubleheader, first defeating St.FX 25-17, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-5. In the nightcap, they blanked Dalhousie 25-18, 25-13 and 25-18.

The Martlets capped off their unblemished weekend with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-18 sweep over Saint Mary's.

All-Canadian power-hitter Jennifer Thomson, a senior from Rosemere, Que., led the way with a four-match total of 49 kills, seven aces, two stuff blocks and 31 digs.

Senior Kelsey Irwin and junior Alexandra Sheppard, both natives of Vancouver, B.C., also posted some impressive numbers.

Irwin, a five-foot-11 middle blocker, was credited with 53 kills, six aces, 15 blocks and 18 digs. Sheppard, a six-foot power-hitter, had 31 kills, three aces, 10 blocks and 42 digs.

The second-place Martlets improved to 10-2 in the Quebec conference, sandwiched behind the undefeated Montreal Carabins (11-0) and ahead of the Laval Rouge et Or (9-2). Sherbrooke sits fourth with a 7-3 record.

McGill wraps up the first semester this week with a home match against Sherbrooke on Friday at Love Competition Hall (6 p.m.) and then travel around the mountain to meet the No.2-ranked Carabins on Sunday at 1 p.m.
