V-ball Martlets lick Laval in marathon thriller
MONTREAL – Jennifer Thomson of Rosemere, Que., and Alexandra
Sheppard of North Vancouver, B.C., had 13 kills apiece as the
No.10-ranked McGill volleyball Martlets outlasted Laval 3-2 in a
Halloween thriller at Love Competition Hall, Friday.
In a two-hour and 20-minute marathon, McGill prevailed by set
scores of 27-25, 23-25, 23-25, 25-18 and 15-9. The victory left
McGill tied with Laval for second-place in the four-team Quebec
conference. Both teams have identical 5-1 records, two points back
of the undefeated Montreal Carabins (6-0).
In men’s action, Laval needed just 70 minutes to sweep the Redmen
25-15, 25-16, 25-18.
Thomson, a 5-foot-7, All-Canadian power hitter, also contributed a
team-leading 24 digs and four assists, while Sheppard, who stands
5-foot-11 and plays the technique position, added 14 digs and a
pair of aces.
Kelsey Irwin, a junior middle blocker from Vancouver, posted some
solid numbers as well for the McGill women. She had 12 kills, six
stuff blocks and four digs.
Julie Rodrigue and Melanie Savoie led Rouge et Or with 20 and 19
kills, respectively. Savoie also had 25 digs, while teammate
Catherine Marois-Julien was credited with a game-high 29
digs.
The Martlets hit the road for their next three matches. They are
scheduled to play Montreal on Nov. 7, then head to Sherbrooke (Nov.
9) and Quebec City for a re-match with Laval (Nov. 14).
