Tri-captains named for Redmen hoopsters

Published: 14 November 2008

MONTREAL – Craig Norman, head coach of the No.9-ranked McGill men’s basketball squad, has announced that three veterans will share the captaincy in the team's 106th season.

Sean Anthony, a fifth-year senior from Vancouver B.C., NCAA-transfer Moustafa El Zanaty of Montreal and junior Pawel Herra of Kingston, Ont., were picked for the honour, which marks the second time since the team was founded in 1904, that the McGill basketball program will have tri-captains. The last time it happened was 17 years ago, in 1991-92, when Bruce Bird, Keith Driscoll and Cam Mathison (recently of Dancing with the Stars fame), shared the captaincy.

The Redmen open the QUBL regular season Friday, with the first of a home-and-home series against Bishop’s. McGill hosts the Gaiters at Love Competition Hall in a women’s and men’s doubleheader (6 & 8 p.m.), then travels to Lennoxville for a rematch on Saturday night.

Anthony, a 6-foot-4, 204-pound forward, is averaging 17.4 points and 9.0 rebounds per game after 13 preseason contests. The 22-year-old physical education major is a three-time conference all-star who has scored 1,550 points in 133 career games, reaching the 20-point plateau 25 times. He has pulled down 684 rebounds and managed 17 ‘double-doubles”, including a rare ‘triple-double”.

El Zanaty, better known as “Moose”, is a 6-foot-4, 195-pound shooting guard who is leading the team with 25.7 points over 14 games to date. He leads in almost every offensive category, including assists (56). In his two seasons with the Redmen, the fifth-year transfer from Fresno Pacific University has racked up 850 points in 45 career games. The 25-year-old finance & treasury major had a career-best 44-point performance against Dalhousie on Nov. 1 and is nine three-pointers shy of the centennial mark for McGill.

Herra, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound guard, is averaging 8.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game over 14 preseason tilts to date. The third-year physical education major has reached double figures in scoring 24 times in 77 career contests and has tallied 534 points with 207 rebounds.
