Thomson's tally helps McGill women lick Laval

QUEBEC CITY – Senior Jennifer Thomson of Rosemere, Que., racked up
a game-high 17 kills and 16 digs as visiting McGill rallied to
upset Laval 3-1 in women’s university volleyball at the Centre PEPS
in Quebec City, Friday.
The Martlets lost the opening set 25-14 but roared back to win
25-22, 26-24 and 25-18. The two-hour affair was the second victory
for McGill in four confrontations with Laval this season and both
teams are now tied for second place in the Quebec conference,
sporting identical 12-6 records, with only three matches remaining
before playoffs.
In men’s play, Laval swept McGill 25-11, 25-16 25-21.
Thomson, a 5-foot-7 power-hitter, accounted for 18 of the team’s 40
points and recorded an impressive 2.92 passing ratio out of
3.0.
Kelsey Irwin, a 6-foot middle blocker from Vancouver, B.C., added
eight kills, four digs, one block and an assisted block.
McGill will travel around Mt. Royal on Sunday to take on the
undefeated and top-ranked Montreal Carabins (18-0). After that, the
Martlets close out the season with home contests against the
Carabins (Jan. 30) and last-place Sherbrooke (9-9) on Feb. 1.
