Splawinski named McGill & Quebec female athlete of the week

MONTREAL - Sophie Splawinski of Montreal is the McGill and Quebec University female athlete of the week for the period ending March 21, 2010.

Splawinski, a 24-year-old atmospheric science freshman on the women's alpine ski team, won gold in a giant slalom and silver in a slalom to capture the individual championship and lead the McGill alpine ski team to the Quebec university overall title, Sunday, at Stoneham Mountain Resort, located about 25 kilometres north of Quebec City.

A member of the Canadian national team at the age of 17 who previously graduated from Penn State University, Splawinski was first of the 39 racers who competed over the season. She became the third woman in QSSF history to reach the podium in all 10 races over the season.

McGill athletes have now been selected 12 times for the QSSF weekly award, with men winning the honour seven times. The 2009-10 honourees from McGill include:
