Soccer Martlets undefeated season ends abruptly in semifinal

MONTREAL - The McGill Martlets dream of an undefeated season came to a sudden halt, Friday, as the visiting Laval Rouge et Or came away with a 2-1 victory in a Quebec University Soccer League semifinal at Molson Stadium.

听

It was not a memorable night for McGill soccer as the Redmen also went down to defeat, suffering a 3-1 loss to UQAM in a men's semifinal.

听

In the women's match, M茅lissande Guy, the conference's rookie of the year, snapped a 1-1 deadlock with the game-winner in the 75th minute.

听

"The late Laval goal was a killer,'" said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "We pushed but they defended very well. Laval played a perfect game defensively, their back line was solid all night. Still, we had our chances and could not finish. We missed on a penalty shot and hit the crossbar. Laval had only three shots and score two goals."

听

Marwa Chebbi had given the Rouge et Or a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute but Hannah Rivkin tied the game some four minutes later.

听

A semifinal win would have clinched a berth at the Nationals in PEI or a victory in the last regular season game, a 1-1 draw against Concordia, would have accomplished the same thing as the Martlets would have clinched first place.

听

"We had two chances to qualify for nationals and failed both times," said Mounicot. "We will host the CIS tourney next year but will miss out on some valuable experience by not participating this year against the top teams in Canada."
