Soccer Martlets skunk SCALA, sweep France tour

Published: 8 May 2009

LACQ, France – Freshmen Kyrin Dhaliwal of Burnaby, B.C., and Alexandra Morin-Boucher of St. Gabriel de Brandon, Que., each tallied twice as the McGill Martlets soccer team blanked Sporting Club Arthez Lacq Audejos 7-0 in southern France, Friday.

It was the first loss for SCALA, a senior women's team that went undefeated in the French Aquitane League.

Other McGill marksmen were Kathleen Wakeling, a freshman from Edmonton, plus senior Vanessa Salasky of Norfolk, Va., and Laura Gibson, a rookie from Bloomingdale, Ont.

Freshman goalkeeper Shimone Slomowitz of West Vancouver, B.C., started and earned the victory but shared the shutout with senior Evelyne Boulay of Trois-Rivieres, Que., who played the second half.

The Martlets, who skunked Real Union 11-0 on Wednesday, swept both of their games in the Basque region and are slated to return to Montreal Monday.

"Despite the lopsided scores, it was a worthwhile spring camp for us,” said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot. “It demonstrated that the calibre of women's soccer in Canada was high enough that we will be able to compete against Division 1 teams in future overseas excursions. Many of the coaches and spectators who saw us play here indicated to us that we have the skill to play at that level."
