Soccer Martlets rally to finish indoor season undefeated

MONTREAL -- McGill rallied with four second-half goals en route to a 4-1 win over UQAM to close out regular-season play in women's indoor soccer at the Marie-Victorin Soccer Centre, Friday.
听
The Martlets finished at 6-0-1 and sit atop the indoor league standings for the first time since 2007. That record, combined with their 9-0-5 outdoor season record last fall, means that they went undefeated during an entire school year for the first time since 2003.
听
"UQAM started the game well putting a lot of pressure on our team and we struggled for most of the half not being able to create anything positive on the field," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets.
听
UQAM captain Lora Lehr was awarded a dispted penalty shot and converted it in the 39 minute of play.The referee ruled that there was obstruction in the penalty box, a jusgement call that Mounicot felt that should have been a simple indirect free kick
听
However, the referee also awarded a penalty shot to McGill for a foul on Alexandra Morin-Boucher and Julia Bahen scored on the play to spark the Martlets. Bahen has taken seven penalty shots during the season and has converted each of them.
听
From there, the momentum shifted in faour of McGill and they added three more markers, by Morin-Boucher, Hannah Kirby and Meghan Bourque.
听
Morin-Boucher won the indoor league scoring title for the second consecutive year. She ended up with 10 goals and a pair of assists, earning points in all seven games.
听
"We made some adjustments at halftime," said Mounicot. "We stressed playing a more simple style and winning more battles on the field. But UQAM gave us a solid challenge and they will be a hard opponent in the playoffs."

The Martlets accomplished an impressive season despite missing a number of key injured players, including Kelsey Wilson. Victoria Muccilli, Selena Colarossi, Maggie Keating and Christina Burrows.
听
McGill will now enjoy a week-end off and expect to play Bishop's in the first round of playoffs on March 13 at a yet to be determined site.
