Sinotte need seven catches to move into CIS all-time Top 5

Published: 1 October 2009

National records chase update (#4)

OTTAWA (CIS) - Quarterbacks Dan Brannagan of Queen's and Michael Faulds of Western as well as McGill wide receiver Charles-Antoine Sinotte are among a number of standouts looking to resume their climb up the list of CIS football career leaders this weekend.

A second-team all-Canadian a year ago, Brannagan is the active leader among CIS pivots with 9,236 passing yards and 71 touchdown passes, both good for fifth place on the CIS all-time list. Barring a sub-par performance on Saturday when the No. 4-ranked and undefeated Gaels (4-0) visit Windsor (2-2), the Burlington, Ont., native should move into fourth position in both categories ahead of former Regina star Teale Orban (9,449 yards) and Bill Robinson Sr. (73 TD passes), who played at Saint Mary's and Western in the 70s.

Brannagan is having a stellar senior season. Despite missing one of Queen's first four games and part of another with an injury, he leads the nation with an average of 367 yards per outing and is tied for second place with nine TD strikes.

Faulds, who leads the country at the midway mark of the campaign with 10 TD passes and ranks third with a 340-yard-per-game average, is right behind Brannagan on the CIS all-time list with 9,137 yards through the air. The fifth-year senior from Eden Mills, Ont., whose No. 2-Mustangs (4-0) host McMaster (2-2) Saturday, is also the active leader with 1,075 passing attempts (7th on CIS list) and 650 completions (3rd).

Guelph's Justin Dunk, who ranks seventh among CIS career leaders with 9,093 passing yards, will sit out Saturday's match against Waterloo. The Guelph, Ont., native is serving a one-game suspension.

McGill's Matt Connell, who completed his university career last fall, holds the CIS records for passing yards (10,455), attempts (1,364) and completions (816), while three-time Hec Crighton trophy winner Chris Flynn of Saint Mary's ended his career with a CIS-best 87 passing majors.

Sinotte, a fourth-year veteran from Trois-Rivières, Que., is the active leader among CIS receivers with 172 career catches, 22 less than former Redmen teammate Erik Galas, who set the all-time mark in his final season last fall.

Sinotte, who set the single-season CIS record of 72 receptions back in 2007, ranks eighth on the career list going into Saturday's meeting with Bishop's (1-3), one catch behind both James MacLean of Queen's and Chad Goldie of Regina. The No. 5 spot held by former Windsor great Arjei Franklin (178) is also within striking distance.

Guelph kicker Rob Maver is the CIS active leader in both career field goals (54) and points (269). Currently sitting in eighth position on the all-time field goal list, the Brampton, Ont., native is one short of Saskatchewan's Dave Osiowy, two behind StFX's Jadran Mlinarevic and five short of McMaster's Michael Ray, who sits in fifth place.

Saint Mary's Justin Palardy of Truro, N.S., is second among active CIS kickers with 52 field goals.

Following are the CIS career leaders in major passing categories, as well as receptions, field goals, all-purpose touchdowns and scoring.
