Sea-Hawks outclaw Martlets at Reebok tourney

MONTREAL – McGill freshman Anneth Him-Lazarenko scored a game-high
17 points but it wasn’t enough as No.8-ranked Memorial defeated the
Martlets 66-62 in the Concordia-Reebok invitational women’s
basketball tournament opener, Sunday.
Him-Lazarenko was good on six of 12 attempts from the field and
went 5-for-7 from the charity line. She was also credited with four
rebounds and a steal before fouling out.
Teammate Nathifa Weekes, a senior from Brossard, Que., netted eight
points and now has 994 points in 99 career games for the
Martlets.
Victoria Thistle paced the Sea-Hawks with 14 points and seven
rebounds. Teammate Kelly Himmeiman added 10 points to go with half
a dozen steals.
Memorial, which improved to 11-3 overall, led 11-8 after one
quarter, 34-33 at halftime and 49-39 after three quarters. The
Sea-Hawks had a huge 36-22 edge in rebounding. They shot 33.3 per
cent from the field, 25.0 from three-point range and 66.7 from the
foul-line.
In other opening-round games, Regina mastered McMaster 77-39,
Alberta dumped UNB 76-57 and Concordia conquered Carleton
73-63.
