SHERBROOKE - Four different players scored tries as the visiting McGill Redmen came from behind to upend Sherbrooke 34-3 in the Quebec University Rugby League regular season opener, Sunday.
It was McGill's ninth straight victory over QURL teams, dating back to Oct. 26, 2008 when the Vert & Or shocking the Redmen 25-17 on the final day of the regular season to snap a 19-game win streak in league play.
A much-improved Sherbrooke side battled hard with solid defence and a punishing offence. McGill spotted Sherbrooke an early 3-0 lead when Louis-Philippe Dauphin connected on a penalty kick but the Redmen bounced back with 34 unanswered points.
A pair of first-half tries were scored by Toronto natives Brendan O'Sullivan, a junior winger and Devon Howard, a sophomore flanker, who tallied his first of two on the day. Both were converted by Mathieu Sidoti, a civil engineering senior from Beijing, who finished with nine points after adding a penalty goal to put the Redmen ahead 17-3 at halftime.
McGill wore Sherbrooke down in the second half, registering tries from rookie Nic Lefrancois-Santo of St. Lambert, Que., and the aforementioned Howard. Rounding out the scoring was Liam Brown, an exchange student from England who kicked a penalty goal and Hong Kong native Ollie Leung, who added one conversion.
The Redmen (1-0) will put their undefeated streak on the line Friday against Concordia (1-0) at Loyola Campus.
