Redmen rugby routs Concordia in Quebec semifinal
MONTREAL – Mike Davis, a junior fullback from Mississauga, Ont.,
tallied three tries as division-champion McGill crushed Concordia
41-0 in a Quebec University Rugby League semifinal at Molson
Stadium, Sunday.
The Redmen got off to a slow start and only led 10-0 at halftime
but exploded for 31 points in the second stanza.
“Initially we had a hard time getting the ball out wide to our
wings and seemed to be (on a different wavelength) with the
referees,” said Davis. “But in the second half, we listened to the
referees instructions and then things started to roll.”
Other try scorers for McGill included Matthew Edwards of Guelph,
Ont., Cayse Ruiter of Ottawa and Mathieu Sidoti, a native of
Beijing.
Rounding out the rout was Sam Skulsky, a freshman from Calgary, who
added 11 points with four conversions and a penalty goal.
“It was a little frustrating in the first half,” said Redmen
co-head coach Craig Beemer. “But we were very disciplined,
committed to our systems and they eventually clicked.”
Beemer noted that a stunning 25-17 loss at Sherbrooke last week,
which snapped McGill’s 19-game win streak, played a role.
“That served as a big wake-up call,” he noted. “The guys were
definitely more focused at practice this past week.”
McGill, 6-2-1 overall, are poised to win their third consecutive
Quebec conference title when they host second-place Bishop’s in the
league championship game next Saturday at 1 p.m. The Gaiters
advanced after edging Sherbrooke 11-9 at Bruce Coulter Stadium in
the other QURL semifinal last Friday.
