MONTREAL - The Ï㽶ÊÓƵ men's basketball team will open their 111th season next week with the first of six preseason home games against NCAA opponents, including their opener against Illinois State on Aug. 12 at the Sir Arthur Currie gymnasium, 475 Pine Avenue West. It marks the highest number of U.S.-based teams ever hosted by McGill in one season.

Ìý

The Redmen will also host the University of Central Florida Knights (Aug. 13), a team that features Marcus and Jeff Jordan, both sons of NBA legend Michael Jordan. Other American teams slated to confront the Redmen at Love Competition Hall are the Akron Zips (Aug. 14), Albany Great Danes (Aug. 20), New Hampshire Wildcats (Aug. 24) and Niagara University Purple Eagles (Sept. 3).

Ìý

Advance tickets are now on sale at the Redbird Sports Shop in the McGill Sports Centre. Single game admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. Children 12 and under are admitted free. For the opening weekend (Aug. 12-14), fans can get a discount by purchasing a three-game package. The special rate for adults is $20, while the rate for students and seniors is $10.

Ìý

McGill actually has a seventh NCAA opponent scheduled but it will be an away game at the University of Cincinnati Bearcats on Nov. 1.

Ìý

"We strive to put together the best possible preseason and exhibition schedule," says second-year McGill head coach David DeAveiro, who guided the Redmen to a 16-17 record overall, including a 15-13 mark against CIS teams and a 10-6 third-place finish in the Quebec league last year. "There are many ingredients that go into building a successful program and scheduling is one of the key ones in attracting good recruits."

Ìý

McGill's training-camp roster will feature one senior, two juniors, six sophomores and 10 freshmen.

Ìý

The NCAA teams will begin their invasion of Canada next week. The Illinois State Redbirds have four Canadian games on their agenda, including a local collegiate all-star squad at College Brébeuf (Aug. 9), plus contests at Carleton (Aug. 10), UQAM (Aug. 11) and McGill (Aug. 12).

Ìý

The UCF Knights will be playing three games in Montreal, including the Champlain College Alumni (Aug. 10), Carleton (Aug. 11) and McGill (Aug. 13).

Ìý

The Akron Zips have five games on tap, beginning at Sheridan College (Aug. 11), followed by a doubleheader against UQAM and Champlain College Alumni on Aug. 13, then McGill (Aug. 14) and Carleton (Aug. 16).

Ìý

The NCAA permits their institutions to take foreign tours once every four years. They can only be taken during vacation periods and the teams are allowed up to 10 days of practice prior to departure.

Ìý

Over the past seven years, McGill has posted a 2-16 record against American institutions.

Ìý

Last season, the Redmen won one of five such meetings, including a 76-49 home-court victory over U.Maine-Fort Kent (Jan. 9), a non-NCAA affiliated team. However, it marked McGill's first win over an American college since the Redmen surprised the Virginia Cavaliers 88-83 on Aug. 31, 2008. The four losses were against Maine (87-66), Cincinnati (89-58), Rutgers (80-68) and Robert Morris (77-54).

In 2009, the Redmen were beaten 90-55 by the Saint John's Red Storm (Sept. 5). ÌýIn 2008, McGill lost 72-67 to the Kansas Jayhawks (Aug. 30), defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 88-83 (Aug. 31) and lost 87-73 to the Northeastern Huskies (Sept. 1). In 2007, the Redmen lost 97-88 to Alabama Crimson Tide (Sept. 1) and 107-103 to the Illinois Fighting Illini in double overtime (Sept. 3)... In 2006, McGill lost 76-69 to the U.S. Military Academy (Sept.3) and lost 65-59 to New York Institute of Technology (Oct. 8)... In 2005, McGill lost 70-45 to Western Illinois (Sept. 3), lost 87-80 to St. Michael's College (Oct. 11), lost 85-41 to Albany (Nov. 4) and lost 84-35 to Manhatten (Nov. 5)...
