Redmen clip Ravens, extend win streak to four

Published: 16 November 2008

OTTAWA – Freshman centre Alexandre Picard-Hooper of Boucherville scored the game-winner and added a helper as visiting McGill hung on to defeat Carleton 4-3 in men’s university hockey, Sunday.

It was the fourth straight win for the defending league champion Redmen, who blanked Queen’s 3-0 on Saturday and have battled back to .500 with a 4-4-1 record after opening their 133rd season with an uncharacteristic 0-4-1 start.

Picard-Hooper, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound recruit out of the St. John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, leads the Redmen in points with a 4-6-10 record in nine games.

The Redmen jumped into a 3-1 first period lead on goals by sophomore Evan Vossen (shorthanded) of Swift Current, Sask., rookie Francis Verrault-Paul (power play) of Mashteviatsh, Que., and senior Marko Kovacevic, a native of Serbia.

Verrault-Paul, a 5-foot-9, 169-pound powder-keg, returned to the lineup after serving an automatic one-game suspension for a checking-from-behind infraction which occurred the previous week. He leads the Redmen in goals (5) is second in points (8) and ranks second in the 16-team league with 63 penalty minutes.

Scoring for the Ravens was Andrew Gibbons of Oshawa, defenceman Ryan Beard of Ottawa and Brandon MacLean of Burlington, Ont.

Netminder Danny Mireault, a freshman from Notre Dame des Prairies, Que., made 23 saves for the win, while Alexander Archibald was saddled with the loss as McGill outshot the Ravens 27-26.

The fifth-place Redmen, who avenged last month’s 4-1 loss to Carleton, trail the second-place Ravens (6-3-1) by four points in the OUA Far East division with a game in hand.

McGill is 8-10-1 lifetime against the pesky Ravens.

The Redmen will begin a three-game homestand on Nov. 21 when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues at McConnell Arena (7 pm).

REDMEN RAP: McGill continues to shine in the faceoff department, posting an impressive 43-21-4 record from the 68 draws taken against Carleton... Vincent Lambert (13-6-0), Alex Picard-Hooper (10-4-2) and Maxime Langelier-Parent (10-5-1) were the best performers in the faceoff circle... The injuries continued to mount for McGill as two more players left the game in the second period: Senior forward Marko Kovacevic, who had one goal and an assist, and junior Leonard Verrilli both suffered apparent back spasms and their status is tentatively considered to be day-to-day... The Redmen already have a short bench with injuries to G Hubert Morin (shoulder), senior D Erik Stilling (shoulder), senior F Eric L Italien (arm) and junior Benoit Arsenault (eye) all out of commission.
