Redmen bench boss to coach Canadian U-17 team at FIBA world championship

TORONTO - Canada Basketball has appointed Ï㽶ÊÓƵ head coach David DeAveiro to lead the 2012 men's national cadet team, an under-17 squad currently ranked fifth in the world in the FIBA boy's world rankings.

The team will participate in the FIBA U-17 world championship tournament in Lithuania, June 29 to July 8.Ìý Canada qualified for the event by finishing third at the 2011 FIBA Americas U-16 championship.

DeAveiro, a 48-year-old native of Toronto, who now resides in Montreal, has an extensive coaching history within the men's national team program, including serving as an assistant coach at the senior, development and junior levels, and just completed his second campaign as bench boss at McGill. He has guided to Redmen to back-to-back second-place finished in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, posting a combined 20-12 regular season record.

Prior to his current post, DeAveiro was the all-time winningest head coach in the University of Ottawa's men's basketball history, where he led the Gee-Gees to three CIS Final 8 appearances in his nine years as head coach. DeAveiro was named three times as OUA East coach of the year (2006, 2007, 2010).

Among DeAveiro's stints as an assistant coach was with Jay Triano's staff on the national hoops squad at the 2011 PanAm Games in Mexico, a 2003 pre-Olympic tourney in China, the 2007 FISU Summer Games in Bangkok where Canada won bronze, the 2008 FIBA Americas under-18 championship in Argentina and the 2009 FIBA world junior championship in New Zealand.

DeAveiro also served as a guest coach to Leo Rautins at a national senior team training camp in 2010.

Assisting DeAveiro on the national cadet team will be Barnaby Craddock of Abbotsford, B.C., and Stephan Barrie of Kingston, Ont.

Craddock helped lead Canada to a silver medal at the 2011 Summer Universiade as an assistant coach and took the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades to the 2012 CIS Final 8.Ìý Craddock was named CIS Coach of the Year in 2007 and played professionally in Europe for seven years.Ìý Barrie is the head coach at Queen's University, following a very successful five-year term as the women's head coach at Western University where he led the Mustangs to a 79% winning percentage in OUA play and two years as an assistant coach with the men's program at the University of Toronto.

Tarry Upshaw of Burlington, Ont., will serve as the team's apprentice coach, with Mike Katz of Toronto and Renato Pasquali, a native of Italy, both working as mentor coaches to the coaching staff.

Upshaw, a former assistant coach in the CIS and head coach in the CCAA and FIBA professional ranks, is the head coach of REDA where he captured the 2011 and 2012 NPSAA championships. Katz has an impressive history as a national team, CIS and CCAA coach, including leading Canada to the silver medal at the 1997 Summer Universiade and serving as an assistant coach in the 2000 Olympic Games.Ìý Pasquali serves as the organization's technical director and has been an assistant coach with the senior men since 2009. Additionally, Pasquali has a storied history of international success in professional basketball in Europe.

The team begins their schedule with open tryouts at Ryerson University in Toronto on May 17, followed by invitational tryouts, May 18-21.
