Redbirds fly the coop at national championships

COTE ST. LUC, QC – Jake Waugh hit a first-inning grand slam and knocked in five runs as the University of New Brunswick mastered the McGill Redbirds 9-0 yesterday at the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association national championships, held at Trudeau Park in Cote St. Luc.

Waugh, who went 2-for-4, also had an RBI-single in the third inning.

In other games, the St. Clair College Saints of Windsor, Ont., blanked College Lafleche of Trois-Rivieres and Durham College of Oshawa, Ont., edged the Atlantic Baptist University Mets from Moncton 4-3.

McGill will play a doubleheader at Trudeau Park today, taking on the Lafleche Dragons at 11 a.m., followed by the Durham Lords at 2 p.m. In other games at Parc Eloi-Viau in LaSalle, St. Clair plays UNB at 11 am and UNB plays ABU at 2 p.m.
