Power failure and penalties cost Redmen in Guelph
By Earl Zukerman
GUELPH – Rookie Mark Pawlowski, a defensive defenceman from
Mississauga, Ont., assisted on all three goals as Guelph rallied to
upend visiting McGill 3-1 in men’s university hockey at the Gryphon
Centre Arena, Sunday.
The Redmen power play continued to struggle, going 0-for-4 against
Guelph after an 0-for-6 performance in a 4-2 victory at Brock the
previous night.
McGill, which outshot Guelph 36-26, self-destructed with numerous
trips to the penalty box. They were called 12 times for 51 minutes,
compared to the Gryphons, who were assessed only five minors. By
game’s end, McGill had played shorthanded for a total of 13 minutes
and 34 seconds and the Gryphons went 1-for-9 with the
man-advantage.
Evan Vossen, a sophomore from Swift Current, Sask., gave the Redmen
an early lead at 2:37 of the opening stanza but got three
unanswered goals by Justin Gvora, Derek Knowles and Kris
Belan.
Vossen was later ejected early in the third period on a checking
from behind penalty.
Guelph goalie Andrew Jennings (6-6-0) made 36 saves for the win,
while McGill freshman Danny Mireault turned aside 23 of 26 in a
losing cause and fell to 7-6-0.
With nine games remaining before playoffs, the fourth-place Redmen,
fell to 10-7-2, two points behind third-place Carleton (11-8-2) and
two ahead of last-place Ottawa. If the season ended today, all five
teams in the OUA Far-East would qualify for post-season play and
only one (Toronto) would make it from the OUA Mid-East.
The Redmen will host the Gee-Gees on Saturday, Jan. 24 (7 pm) and
are expecting to have a special guest in attendance at McConnell
Arena. Former alumnus Mike Babcock, head coach of the Stanley
Cup-champion Detroit Red Wings, will be in Montreal to coach the
NHL all-star game and has indicated that he will be attending the
Redmen game as soon as his duties are over at the NHL skills
competition, also slated for Saturday evening.
REDMEN RAP: McGill forward Maxime Langelier-Parent was ejected at
5:12 of the middle period after receiving a rare major for
charging. The infraction had initially been judged as a minor
penalty by referee Steve Stasiuk but Dustin McCrank, one of the
linesmen, who played for Guelph two years ago, convinced the head
official that a major was warranted.
