Plante and Wright named McGill Olde Orchard athletes of the week

MONTREAL - Geneviève Plante of Montreal and Andrew Wright of Toronto are the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ - Ye Olde Orchard athletes of the week, for the period ending Mar. 4, 2012.

Plante, a 5-foot-9 power hitter on the women's volleyball team, was twice named as McGill's player of the game and earned a berth on the all-tournament team as the Martlets pulled off upsets over fourth-seeded Saint Mary's and the No.3-seeded Montreal Carabins in their three games to capture bronze at the CIS championship in Hamilton last weekend. A 21-year-old science sophomore who majors in kinesiology, she racked up 37 total points on 36 kills and a stuff block in 21 sets. On defence, she also had 38 digs, and three assists. Plante, who received a Quebec Foundation recruitment bursary when she enrolled at McGill in 2010, previously played for College Lionel-Groulx.

Wright, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound forward on the men's hockey team, who was invited to a Montreal Canadiens try-out camp last summer, scored three goals and added a pair of assists as McGill swept their best-of-three conference final series over the UQTR Patriotes over the weekend. The 22-year-old economics senior netted the winning goal and collected a pair of helpers in a 5-3 victory in the series opener last Wednesday. He then tallied twice, including the game-winner in double overtime to clinch the series at Trois-Rivières on Saturday and qualify the Redmen for a berth in the CIS championship at Fredericton, March 22-25. Wright joined the Redmen in 2008 out of the Crescent School in Toronto.
