Picard-Hooper, Martin named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL - Alexandre Picard-Hooper of Boucherville, Que., and Marie-Eve Martin of Granby, Que., are the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ athletes of the week for the period ending Dec. 5, 2010.

Picard-Hooper, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound centre with the men's hockey team, scored 10 points in three games last week. The 23-year-old finance junior tallied twice (including the game-winner) and added three assists in a 7-4 win on Saturday. The previous night, he registered three assists in McGill's 8-2 victory over Ottawa. He also contributed a pair of assists in a 4-3 shootout loss at UQTR last Wednesday. Picard-Hooper, who leads the nation with 32 assists in 18 games, joined the Redmen in 2008 after playing for St. John and Baie Comeau in the QMJHL. He entered McGill out of College Baie Comeau.

Martin, a 5-foot-7 guard on the women's basketball team, scored a game-high 21 points as McGill improved to 5-0 with an 80-54 victory over visiting Laval last Saturday. She was also credited with six rebounds, two blocks and a steal. The 21-year-old sociology sophomore shot 8-for-15 from the field, including a 5-for-10 performance from three-point range. She made all five treys in the first half and fell one shy of tying the team's single-game record. Martin is a product of Vanier College.
