CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In a season-opening exhibition against McGill, the Harvard women's hockey team displayed a poised penalty-killing unit and posted a workmanlike, 3-1, victory over the Martlets Saturday afternoon at the Bright Hockey Center.

Backed by stellar goaltending from Laura Bellamy, who posted 23 saves, Harvard played shorthanded for almost 20 minutes and thwarted 11 of 12 McGill power-plays, including a pair of 5-on-3 scenarios.

After a scoreless first period, Leslie Oles one-timed a Melodie Daoust pass right on the doorstep to put McGill up 1-0 on the power-play at the 10:47 mark. Harvard responded six minutes later when Gina McDonald threaded a pass across the front of the McGill goal to Jillian Dempsey, who lifted a shot over goalie Charline Labonte's shoulder to knot the score at 1-1 after two periods.

In the final stanza, Kalley Armstrong picked off an errant McGill pass near her own blueline, hustled down the length of the ice and beat Labonte with a shot from close range to give Harvard a 2-1 lead on a short-handed effort. McDonald capped the scoring in the game with an empty-net tally with 20 seconds to play. She finished the game with two points, notching a goal and an assist.

Labonte was credited with 28 saves in a losing cause.

Harvard opens its regular-season schedule on the road next weekend as it takes on St. Lawrence on Oct. 28, while McGill will resume regular season play against the Montreal Carabins on Oct. 29 at McConnell Arena in a 3 p.m. start.
