Pain, from migraine headaches to disabling back spasms to the excrutiating and endless neuropathy brought on by chemotherapy, is one the world’s most serious health problems. Pain causes untold personal suffering and costs the economy billions due to lost work days. On Thurs., Jan. 22 close to 200 pain experts will gather at McGill to address these issues and to present new discoveries in the field.

"Understanding pain, particularly chronic pain, is complex," says Dr Catherine Bushnell, director of the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain, which hosts McGill Pain Day. "Only through the sharing of information and interdisciplinary collaborations will we better understand and develop therapies for this health problem."

This year’s plenary lecture “Towards integrated assessment and management of pain and other symptoms – It’s all in the brain,” will be presented by be Dr. Eduardo Bruera, University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Other events include poster session, prizes for best trainee presentations and a trainee workshop.

“The critical mass of pain researchers and clinicians at McGill University and the MUHC ensures that this complex area receives the attention it deserves, both by daily study, and through special events like this,” said Dr. Terrence Coderre, Chair of the Pain Day organizing committee.

McGill Pain Day is organized by the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain and the McGill Department of Anesthesia, and is sponsored by The Louise and Alan Edwards Foundation.
