OUA increases cap on athletic scholarships

HUNTSVILLE, Ont. - The Ontario University Athletics board of directors have voted to increase the caps on individual Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs), commonly known as athletic scholarships. The motion passed with a 14-4 majority in favour of increasing the cap from $3,500 to $4,000 commencing in the 2012-13 season. The decision was made at the OUA Annual General Meeting held in Huntsville, Ont., on May 13.

"The decision by the Board further demonstrates our commitment to student-athletes," said OUA President Gord Grace. "Increasing the Athletic Scholarship amount will allow OUA member schools to continue to attract the best and brightest."

In September of 2001, the OUA increased the maximum level of AFAs from $1,500 to $2,500 and in September 2005 that figure was increased to $3,500.

The OUA Board also approved two motions directing the AFA task force to gather additional data that will be used to inform future AFA funding decisions.
