With the education summit fast approaching, the Parti Québécois finds itself in a very interesting position. A recent Léger poll on Quebecers’ preferences for education policy offers what appears to be a clear path to majority support from the public: indexing tuition fees to inflation. Following that path will come with a serious cost, however: the PQ will have to abandon the student movement that helped it get elected. This is an interesting example of the not-so-rare situation in which a government must choose between representing past voters and seeking future support.
