OBIT:Robillard captained, coached hockey, football
MONTREAL – The McGill department of athletics and recreation
regretfully announces the passing of Rock Robillard, a former
hockey and football star at McGill, who went on to coach the hockey
Redmen.
A sports broadcaster with CFRA and CJOH and play-by-play announcer
with the Ottawa Rough Riders, Robillard died in Ottawa on Monday
(Oct. 27). He was 86.
“Rocky” had the rare distinction of captaining both the McGill
hockey and football teams in his senior year. After graduation, he
became a full-time staff member, serving seven years as an
assistant football coach (under the Doug Kerr and Vic Obeck
regimes), while serving as head coach of the hockey Redmen from
1951 to 1958, guiding the team to a 54-64-5 record overall.
Born Rock Anthony Robillard on Aug. 28, 1922 in Ottawa, he was
educated at Lisgar Collegiate and St. Pat’s College.
A member of No. 429 Squadron, he served with the army and air force
from 1942 to 1945 and flew numerous missions in the Avro Lancaster,
a four-engine, heavy bomber, which was arguably the most famous and
successful night bomber used during the Second World War.
A gifted athlete and humble recipient of many athletic awards,
Robillard entered McGill in 1947, where he also competed on the
intermediate track and basketball teams, before graduating with a
science degree (physical education) in 1950.
After stepping down from his coaching duties at McGill, Robillard
moved back to his hometown to embark on a teaching and
administrative career at the University of Ottawa, St. Patrick’s
and Fisher Park schools, Ridgemont and Highland Park high
schools.
Under his grad photo in the 1950 Old McGill yearbook, was one of
his favourite expressions: “It’s not the size of the dog in the
fight. It’s the size of the fight in the dog.”
He is survived by five siblings (Joan, Henry, Betty, Matthew,
Laurie), three daughters (Wendy, Patty, Nancy), six grandchildren,
two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, (Nov. 8), at 11 am at
Holy Redeemer Church, 44 Rothesay Drive, Kanata, Ont.
Interment at Norway Bay United Cemetery will take place at a later
date. In lieu of flowers , donations may be made to the
Hemodialysis Unit of the Ottawa Hospital (General Campus), 501

Dad's final wish was to spend a crisp autumn afternoon sitting on
the porch of his cottage at "The Point" in Norway Bay...and he
did.
