Published: 12 January 2007

MUHC Director General and CEO Dr. Arthur T. Porter signed an agreement today with the Wuxi Cancer Hospital in Jiangsu Province in China to establish a Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Canada Wuxi China Diagnostic and Therapeutic Cooperation and Exchange Centre.

Wuxi Cancer specializes in tertiary care oncology, anesthesia and thorax and cardiac surgery. It is part of the Wu Xi city regional health network and affiliated with Nanjing and Suzhou medical schools.

"As part of Ï㽶ÊÓƵ and a world leader in academic health care, the MUHC has an important role to play in helping to strengthen clinical and management knowledge internationally. We recognize that quality heath care is increasingly a global challenge and that these kinds of collaborations benefit all the partners," said Dr. Porter.

The McGill Wuxi virtual centre will reinforce clinical collaborations in diagnostic and therapeutic technologies as well as hospital management expertise through the Desautels Faculty of Management at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, he added.

Among the planned activities will be opportunities for clinicians from Wuxi Cancer Hospital to study at the MUHC and other McGill-affiliated hospitals. As well, clinical leaders and hospital management leaders from the MUHC and McGill will visit Wu Xi to lecture and lead training activities.

Representatives of Ï㽶ÊÓƵ and the MUHC visited the hospitals in the Wu Xi network in October 2006. A delegation from the Wu Xi City health bureau and its affiliated hospitals is now visiting Montreal to further strengthen relationships between the two health networks. The delegation is led by Dr. Du Shou Qaing, CEO of the Wu Xi Health Bureau, and includes clinicians and senior management from the Wuxi Cancer Hospital. This agreement reflects the commitment of both partners to continued collaboration.
