MONTREAL - Midfielder Alexandra Morin-Boucher scored a hat-trick as the McGill Martlets opened their season with a 5-1 victory over visiting Sherbrooke in Quebec University Soccer League action before 541 noisy fans at Molson Stadium, Friday.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill were freshmen Meghan Bourque of Burlington, Ont., and Bianca Cordileone of Laval, Que., who tallied in the 61st and 90th minutes, respectively.

Morin-Boucher, a physical education junior from Montreal, put the Martlets ahead 2-0 with markers in the 12th and 19th minutes. Sherbrooke forward Andréanne Gagné, a native of Ste. Hyacinthe, Que., put the Vert & Or on the scoreboard with a penalty-kick in 23rd minute but after halftime, Morin-Boucher made it 3-1 to all but put the game out of reach in the 58th minute.

Teammates Hannah Rivkin of St. John's, NL, and Anna Smith of Boston, Mass., were each credited with a pair of assists.

"Morin-Boucher played at a strong pace and found her scoring touch early on," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets.

"Our first half was only an average one with respect to on-field communication and our level of technical performance but lineup changes at halftime brought a new dynamic on the field and I was more pleased with our decision-making and tactical play. Overall, we responded well against a good, solid Sherbrooke squad, one that finished third last year."

Rookie netminder Valérie Labbé of Mascouche, Que., made four saves to register her first regular season victory in CIS play. Sherbrooke 'keeper Marie-Michelle Coulombe, a fifth-year senior from Malartic, Que., was also credited with four saves and took the loss.
