Morin-Boucher double dips as Martlets master Pats

MONTREAL -- Alexandra Morin-Boucher of St. Gabriel de Brandon, Que., scored twice as McGill rolled to a 3-0 whitewash over the UQTR Patriotes in women's soccer on a rain-slicked surface at Molson Stadium, Sunday.

It was the fourth consecutive victory for the Martlets (4-2) after starting out the season with back-to-back losses. The result moved McGill three points ahead of the Patriotes, who evened their record at 3-3-0.

McGill had a 13-5 advantage in shots on net and identical 6-1 margins in both corner kicks and crossing passes.

Goalkeeper Anne-Catherine Huot, a 5-foot-8 junior from Quebec City, made nine saves to earn her second shutout in as many starts this season.

Ìý

Morin-Boucher, a 5-foot-6 education sophomore, netted what proved to be the game-winner at the nine-minute mark, then put McGill ahead 2-0 in the 64th minute of play.

Ìý

Rookie midfielder Laura Bland-Lasso of Ottawa, iced the contest in the 70th minute when she converted a pass from Claire Hooper of London, Ont.

Ìý

"We had to play without our two injured captains (defenders Elizabeth Williams and Katherine Green) as a result, looked flat for the first 45 minutes," said head coach Marc Mounicot. "But with some substitutions, we picked up the pace in the second half and showed that we have some depth that we can count on. One positive was that we did not give the Patriotes much room in the final third of the game. But we will have to step it up a notch in aggressiveness all over the field."

Williams is expected to return to the staring lineup in the next game, a crucial affair against Laval at Molson Stadium, Friday. Green, however, is expected to be out for at least three weeks after suffering a leg injury against Bishop's last Friday.

The Martlets are tied with second-place Laval (4-1) but the Rouge et Or hold a game in hand.
