Moose becomes third Redmen to reach 700-point plateau
By Earl Zukerman
QUEBEC CITY – Montreal native Moustafa El Zanaty became the third
player in school history to reach the 700-point plateau but he was
outshone by Laval’s Xavier Baribeau and Etienne Labrecque, who
netted 27 and 26 points, respectively, as Laval continued their
dominance over the visiting McGill Redmen with a 97-75 victory in
men’s hoops action at Quebec City, Saturday.
El Zanaty scored 23 points to lead the Redmen. The 6-foot-4 guard
now has 706 points on the season in 30 games overall. The only
Redmen who had better offensive outputs in a season were Nasko
Golomeev (900 points in 24 games, 1968-69) and Pierre Brodeur (727
points in 25 games, 1969-70).
El Zanaty also has exactly 2,000 points in 136 collegiate career,
including 1,196 with the Redmen and the remainder with a number of
NCAA schools. He currently has a McGill single record of 81
three-pointers, nine more than teammate Matt Thornhill.
The Rouge et Or, which swept their four-game series over McGill,
remained tied with for second place with UQAM. Each team sports
identical 8-6 records.
The fourth-place Redmen dropped to 5-9 and are tied with Bishop’s,
who finished their schedule at 5-11. McGill needs to split their
upcoming series with Concordia (Feb. 20-21) in order to assure
themselves a playoff berth in the topsy-turvy Quebec
conference.
