McGill's Picard-Hooper named De Facto Quebec university athlete of the week

MONTREAL - McGill hockey player Alexandre Picard-Hooper is the De Facto Quebec university male athlete of the week for the period ending Jan. 9, 2011.

Picard-Hooper, a 23-year-old centre on the men's hockey team scored six points in two road victories over the weekend as the No.3-ranked Redmen improved to 18-0-2 in league play. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound finance junior tallied a pair of goals and added two assists in Sunday's 6-2 win at Concordia. He had two helpers in Saturday's 3-2 overtime conquest in Ottawa, setting up the overtime winner. Picard-Hooper now leads the CIS national scoring race with an 8-36-44 record in 20 games.

The Quebec female athlete of the week award went to Montreal Carabins hockey player Kim Deschenes, a native of Saint-Quentin, N.B.

It marks the second time this season that he has won this award and the seventh timeÌý that a McGill student has captured the conference's weekly award by the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec. Previous recipients from McGill include distance runner Sarah McCuaig (Sept. 20 and Nov. 1), hockey players Francis Verreault-Paul (Oct. 26) and Alex Picard-Hooper (Oct. 16), rugby player Gideon Balloch (Nov. 16), plus soccer star Alexandra Morin-Boucher (Sept. 13).

De Facto is an innovative tobacco prevention campaign led by Sport Étudiant, geared towardsÌýeliminating smoking among young adults and revealing the truth about the consequences of using tobacco.
